Nicole's Note: Jan 10th

Happy New Year to all of our Canyon families! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and that you were able to relax and spend some quality time with your families and friends.

One of the things I love most about working in education is that there are built-in starts and ends throughout the school year. These milestones allow us to re-energize over the breaks and start fresh each time we reenter the campus. Two big topics I have spent some time thinking about over the break are safety and attendance.

As you know, school safety is at the forefront of my thoughts, as I’m sure you too have been thinking a lot about this topic over the last month. Our entire district and school staff makes your child’s safety a top priority, and we will continue to work diligently to maintain a safe school environment. You may have noticed that we have “tightened up” a few things at Canyon. We are not changing many things, but rather enforcing more rules and practices that are in place. We are an elementary school that has the main purpose of serving young children. The staff at Canyon tries its best to be as open and inviting as possible, while also maintaining a level of security that keeps our students safe and secure. Securing safety for all students sometimes necessitates making a decision that causes an inconvenience for some families, but we appreciate your understanding, support and patience as we try to maintain an environment that is safe and supportive.

As we return for the second half of the school year, I also want to remind you of the importance of student attendance. When students are absent, it not only hurts them academically, but socially and emotionally as well. There is absolutely no substitution for the actual instruction that they miss from their teacher each day. Help make this our best semester yet in regards to attendance rates by planning all appointments and trips outside of the school day. Getting out early two days a week makes this a reasonable request. Be sure to use the school calendar when scheduling vacations. Students should not have more than 7 absences per school year. We want your kids at school every day and we are fortunate to be in such an environment where the kids also want to be at school every day. Please don’t deprive them of the valuable education that they receive on a daily basis at Canyon.

I look forward to the New Year and wait for the challenges that it will offer. I am looking forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday.

Here’s to a wonderful 2016!

Sincerely,
Nicole
