Happy New Year Canyon Families and Friends!
I hope that you enjoyed your Winter Break and had lots of opportunities to celebrate with family members and friends. January is always about fresh beginnings and positive change. I love the promise of the New Year and all the possibilities that exist for our children here at Canyon!

After a number of months in which our attendance figures were well above the District average, the past month saw a significant decline. While it is critical that students remain at home if they are ill, I urge you to plan family trips, excursions, and appointments during designated days off from school. When your child misses a day of school, no matter what the reason, valuable instruction is lost, as well as funding for our school. If your child has an appointment during the school day, please bring him/her to school at the beginning of the day and then come to the office to sign her out when necessary. If the appointment is at the beginning of the day, please bring your child to school as soon as possible and bring him to the office to get a tardy slip before going to class. In both instances, we will receive funding for your child’s attendance that day and they won’t miss a full day of valuable instruction. Thank you for your cooperation.

January is a month of reflections and new beginnings. Celebrate learning, reflect on the growth and begin to imagine how far we can go when we set our expectationshigh and plan a path to reach them. We have a busy and fun-filled semester ahead of us, including the Annual Canyon Talent Show, some great parent education events, the Pali. Spelling bee, book fair, Jump Rope for Heart and so much more! I encourage you to get involved in your child’s education and in school events as much as possible. If you aren’t sure how to get involved, please join a Booster meeting, Governing Council meeting or any of the school Committees. Meeting dates and times are on the school calendar.

Finally, I want to thank everyone for the many thoughtful gifts, cards, and expressions of appreciation that the office staff and I received during the weeks preceding the holiday break.  What a very caring and appreciative community we have – thank you all so very much!

The Canyon community would like to wish everyone health and happiness in the New Year!
