Our Charter
Canyon's Charter
On June 29th, 1993, the Los Angeles Board of
Education granted Canyon's request to become a charter school. Charter
school status, a legislated reform which gives schools freedom to
implement new ideas as long as they produce results, has put Canyon
Charter School in the forefront of educational innovation.
Our school charter has been renewed twice, once in 2000 for 5 years and
again in 2005 for another 5 years. As a charter school, Canyon is
administered by a local governing council, comprised of teachers,
parents, administrators and other staff, which makes decisions
regarding curriculum, hiring, budget, enrollment and the day-to-day
concerns of school administration. This means that Canyon's programs
answer directly to the needs of the student body, the parents and the
community it serves. Most importantly, Canyon sets higher standards for
student performance and the learning environment. The school is funded
by the State of California and the Los Angeles Unified School District,
and operates under the state's charter guidelines. Canyon's enrollment
is open to any student in the L.A. area, allowing the school to build
an integrated and diverse student body, representative of the cultural
and ethnic diversity of L.A. Any student may apply, and all students
attending do so by choice, because they have committed to the Charter's
goals.
