Green Habit of the Month

The idea for a “Green Habit of the Month” germinated from a group of people at our school who wanted to create awareness of our daily impact on the planet. All the children are encouraged to come up with ideas of their own which are shared on the “Green Space” bulletin board (located by the school side gate).   Each month a new habit is chosen from the suggestions by the Student Council’s “Green Team.”   The "Habit of the Month” is displayed on the website and in the Chronicle and on a card that the children are given to take home with them.
We encourage you to post the cards on your fridge or anywhere in your home where it will remind you to make a difference.
To submit an idea, get a “Green Idea” card from the office and put it in the “Green Ideas” box, which is also in the office.  We want to keep each month’s habit simple, specific and doable.

04/08 Recycle Electronics

It's time for spring cleaning

Over the next few weeks, look through your house for old electronics that can be recycled, like cell phones, TVs, computers and printers

Ask your parents to bring them to school on Friday May 2 and drop them off behind the Library.   A truck from California Recycles will pick the electronics up and make sure they are recycled, refurbished or reused.

03/08 Re-Use Blankets

Give your old blankets some new life

Bring your old, washed blankets or comforters to school.  You can also bring new, adult-sized socks and new or old washed adult sweatpants with elastic waistbands

We will be donating these items to people who are more needy than us, so that they can have a good life too.

Our school is working with Poverty Matters, an organization that helps homeless people on Skid Row in Los Angeles.

02/08  Recycle Sneakers
Old athletic shoes were collected on Olympics Day.  Nike will recycle the rubber, foam, and fabric of each shoe as part of their Re-Use a Shoe Program.

1/08  Save Plastic

• Use containers for storage and carrying food, instead of plastic bags.
• Use thermoses or washable bottles instead of buying plastic bottles.
• Bring your own grocery bags to the store or supermarket.
• Come up with you own Green Ideas and put them in the green Idea Box in the Office

12/07  Switch Your Light bulbs.
Switch your regular incandescent light bulbs to Compact Flourescent Light bulbs (CFLs).  CFLs use less energy and can last up to 15 times longer than regular bulbs.  Even if your regular bulb hasn't burned out, you will save more energy if you replace it with a CFL.  Buy CFLs at Canyon during Parent/Teacher conference week and bring your incandescent lightbulbs in for recycling.

[CFLs offered for sale at Canyon School, incandescent lightbulb recycling at school, dovetails with monthlong CFL awareness campaign in the Palisades
120 Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs) were bought by Canyon families]

11/07  Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Batteries
•    Americans buy more than 2 billion household batteries a year.  Many batteries have poisonous metals in them that can pollute the earth.
•    Turn off your battery-powered toys when you’re not using them
•    Use rechargeable batteries whenever you can
•    Recycle your household batteries at school

10/07 Bring Garbage-Free Lunches
Save money and save the planet, instead of using drink boxes and plastic sandwich bags, put your food and drinks in reusable containers.
• Bring metal silverware from home or wash and reuse your plasticware.
• Use a cloth napkin and wash it after use, instead of throwing away paper napkins.
• Come up with your own ideas on how to Bring Garbage-Free Lunches and put them in the Green Idea Box in the Office.

05/07  Reusable Grocery Bags

• Plastic bags are not environmentally friendly.
• Reusable grocery bags are easy to carry and their handles don’t break
• Some markets may even give you money back for bringing your own bags.
• You can buy a Canyon “THIS IS NOT A PLASTIC BAG.” E-mail Meryl Holland at MerylF@aol.com for details.

[“This is Not a Plastic Bag” reusable totes offered for purchase]

04/07  Recycle Electronics

• Over the next three weeks, look through your house for old electronics that can be recycled like cell phones, tvs, computers and printers.
• Ask your parents to bring them to school on Friday, March 30. A truck from California Recycles will pick the electronics up and make sure they are recycled, refurbished, or reused.

[Electonics Recycling Day; over 3.000 pounds of electronics collected]

03/07  Recycle Sneakers

• Bring your old athletic shoes to school THIS WEEK and put them in the boxes near your classroom.
• Nike will recycle the rubber, foam, and fabric of each shoe as part of their Re-Use a Shoe Program.
[Re-Use a Shoe Program coincided with Canyon’s Olympics Day; hundreds of pairs of shoes collected; shoes were displayed in the window at Niketown, Beverly Hills to help kick off their national program]

02/07  Drive Less

• If you live close to school, walk or bike. If you live far away, carpool.
• Take the bus.
• Drive electric/hybrid cars instead of gas guzzlers.
• Come up with your own ideas on how to Drive Less and put them in the Green Idea Box in the Office.

[Children encouraged to walk/bike/carpool to school on a Friday in February]

01/07  Save Water

• Turn off the water while you brush your teeth.
• Take shorter showers and don’t fill up the bathtub all the way.
• Drink all the water in your water bottle, or label it with a sharpie so that you remember it’s yours.
• Don’t leave the sink running.
• Come up with your own ideas on how to Save Water and put them in the Green Idea Box in the Office.

11/06  Recycle Paper

• Make a designated spot in your house and in your classroom for recyclables.
• Use your old work paper as scratch paper.
• Reuse your shopping bags.
• Use a sponge or cloth instead of paper towels.
• Come up with your own ideas on how to recycle paper and put them in the Green Idea Box in the Office.

[Blue Bins introduced at Canyon School]

10/06  Turn Off The Lights

• Become your own family light monitor and encourage everyone to turn off the lights whenever they leave the room.
• Volunteer to be your classroom light monitor.
• Ask your parents to help you check the electricity bill next month to see how much you’ve made a difference.
• Come up with your own ideas on how to save electricity and put them in the Green Idea Box in the Office.

[The students sourced an article on conserving electricity, which was distributed to the teachers.  If you would like to learn more, please visit http://kristensguide.tripod.com/Activism/Environment/conserve_electricity.htm]

New, used & repairable toys, toddler books for Toy Loan

Canyon school collects toys for Toy Loan, a public toy-library housed in 42 centers in underprivileged areas of LA County.  Children borrowing toys learn responsibility through an honor code and a merit system.  Toy Loan is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Department of Public Services and staffed by volunteers.  http://dpss.lacounty.gov/dpss/toyloan/default.cfm

We are collecting used or repairable toys and preschool/ baby books in the box in the school breezeway year round.  Toy Loan also accepts new toys, but you may prefer to save these for the holiday toy gift drive.  If you would like a tax receipt to be mailed to you, just attach your name and address.

If you have questions or a lot of toys that you would prefer to load straight into my car, please contact Ali Stirland    ali@hartavenue.com

Access Books
This agency provides books to inner-city schools in the Los Angeles area.
http://www.accessbooks.net/

Plastic bottles and cans
The money generated from recycling these is used to buy gently used books for the school library

Eye glasses
Canyon school is collecting eyeglasses for underprivileged people in developing countries and the U.S.  We need glasses or sunglasses in all styles, sizes and colors that are complete pairs, ready to wear (but not lenses, frames, cases or contact lenses).

All the eyewear is cleaned, repaired and hand-delivered to those in need by the charity Gift of Sight.  Please leave eyeglasses in the box in the library.

For more information visit www.givethegiftofsight.org If you have questions, please contact Ali Stirland ali@hartavenue.com
