Canyon Charter School was founded in 1894 on a
portion of the Rancho Boca de Santa Monica land grant. The heart of the
campus is the historic one room schoolhouse which contains our library
of over 6,000 volumes and includes a museum of local history and
culture.
This charming schoolhouse is the oldest school building in use by
children in Los Angeles County. With its classic bell tower, it is a
symbol of enlightenment and endurance. The bell still rings out at the
end of the school day, just as it has for over a century.
Canyon is within walking distance of the Pacific Ocean, in a locale
with a rich history that draws from Spanish and Mexican settlers,
Chumash Indians, Japanese fishermen, Russian workers, and German
emigres.
Throughout the campus historic photos, native plants, and faithfully
kept traditions give students a continued awareness of the school's
heritage. Canyon students have the rare opportunity, not only to study
history, but also to live it.
