Toy Loan Program
Clearing out old toys to make room for the new?
Donating gently used toys is a great way for children to help other children and the planet, without their parents having to open their check books!
For the last 5 years Canyon School has collected toys for Toy Loan, a free service which operates like a library with toys instead of books. There are over 45 Toy Loan centers in LA County, located in parks, recreation facilities, children’s centers, libraries, housing projects, community service buildings, and a homeless shelter. The centers are run by volunteers and serve as a resource for teachers, educators, school psychologists, and County personnel who borrow toys, books, and games to enhance learning and stimulate communication in therapy. Over 30,000 children are served annually by the various services offered by the program.
Toy loan gives borrowers access to toys that they may not be able to afford to buy and teaches responsibility through an honor code system. Toy Loan is also eco-friendly – re-using gives many children the opportunity to play with a single toy.
You can leave new, used or repairable toys and preschool/baby books in the box in the school breezeway year round. If you would like a tax receipt to be mailed to you, just attach your name and address to the bag. If you have questions or a lot of toys that you would prefer to load straight into my car, please contact Ali or call 310 452 0823
GREEN TENNIS SHOE AWARD” is back!
In an effort to reduce Canyon’s carbon footprint, as well as traffic congestion, the “GREEN TENNIS SHOE AWARD” is back! Every Friday, the classroom with the highest percentage of kids who walked, biked, rode the bus, carpooled, or used some other form of “GREEN” transportation to get to school that day will receive the “GREEN TENNIS SHOE AWARD” for the week!!!
PLAY GROUND RULES: Please be reminded that after school use of the apparatus is only allowable if children are directly supervised by a student’s parent/guardian. The playground apparatus will now be available immediately after school. Please remember that in LAUSD the playground apparatus may only be used after school with direct parent/guardian supervision. I appreciate your supporting and following school policy. These policies are in place to keep students safe and prevent unnecessary injuries. Joyce Dara

Communication is very important to me so I've created a blog which I update regularly. Please read it here. You can subscribe to my blog by going to ABOUT and check the box at the bottom of the page that says: "Subscribe by email to this site".
Please remember that my door is always open and I encourage all parents/guardians to feel welcome to communicate any matter and/or concern to me directly.
As we head into the second semester of the school year it’s important to remember that Canyon Charter School is successful due to our community’s ability to collaborate effectively. I encourage all Canyon families to continue to be involved in our school’s decision-making process through regular participation in monthly Committee and Governing Board meetings.
California's accountability program uses the API (Academic Performance Index) to measure school performance. API ranks schools based upon how students in second through fifth grade score on the California standards tests (to be administered in May of this year) in English, Math and in Science. The API scale ranges from 200 to 1,000. Canyon’s current API is 954 and we are ranked as one of the highest performing schools in LA Unified.
Our AGT (Academic Growth over Time) report indicates that overall Canyon students perform far above predicted outcomes (the highest rating). AGT reports help us know how much students progress on standardized tests from one year to the next, comparing a student’s performance to his/her own expected performance.
Our students are successful due to strong parent/guardian and school collaboration and I believe we will only continue to grow as a result of this partnership!
New Families and friends new to Canyon please
Thank you.

STUDENT WISH LISTS: Come visit us and see the student wish lists your children have created. They put a lot of love and effort into these lists. We will help you locate the books they would like to have! What a wonderful gift!
TEACHER WISH BASKETS: There will also be teacher wish baskets. Each teacher, Barbara and STAR will peruse the books and gather a selection of titles they wish to have for their classrooms. These titles will be placed in their own basket for you to choose if you would like to donate a book. We will give you a dedication sticker, so your family name can "remain" in the classroom through the years!
In a hurry? Our wonderful and dedicated volunteers can help you locate the books listed in the various wish lists!
Don't have time to look at the wish list? Tell us how much you want to spend and for whom, and we will take care of everything for you! We can even deliver the books for you!
The Book Fair is not only a wonderful community event that our children look forward to, but it is also a fundraiser for Booster Club. All the money raised by Booster Club (20% of sales) goes directly into the classroom, to benefit our children.
Also, please support the 5th Grade. They will be holding a Bake Sale Monday and Tuesday after school to raise funds for graduation.
theAUCTION is NEW, IMPROVED, and FUN, BABY, FUN!
Sign Up to Volunteer at the event!
The Canyon Silent Auction is the school’s second largest fundraiser next to Annual Giving. And we’re changing it up this year, in a big way. There are a number of new and exciting things that will make this very special event more fun than ever.
A number of the programs at Canyon would simply not exist without it. Period. Imagine Canyon without Art, PE, Barbara our librarian… All of these are made possible because of Canyon fundraising. And with public school funding more challenged than ever before, it’s a critical time for the Canyon community to come together.
Booze, Eats, Tunes...And Entrance is Free
So this year, “theAuction” gets its own dedicated evening! The event will be Friday, February 24th from 7 pm to 10 pm at the gorgeous and modern James Gray Gallery at Bergamot Station. For years, we’ve been hearing from you that it’s a challenge to keep up with your families at Fiesta and also be able to bid on all the wonderful items at theAuction. So we’re taking this opportunity to be more FUN and festive. We’ll give everyone an opportunity to party with Canyon’s grown-ups, with delicious eats from local food trucks and plenty of cocktails of course! The eponymous DJ Dan “Canyon Dad” Chase will be spinning to keep the energy high. Plus, admission to theAuction is completely free and open to the public! So please invite your family and friends of Canyon Charter to come join the fun.
