Nicole's Note: Dec 6th

Hour of Code
Canyon School will be participating in the HOUR of  CODE for the 3rd year this week. During the last few years we have learned the value of implementing Computer Science at Canyon.

Mr. Velado will use some online programs as well as some non hardware lessons to teach computer programming basics.

Here is a link to a great TEDTalk with the co-founder Hadi Partovi, of CODE.ORG a non-profit organization that started The Hour of Code.

The week of December 7th-13th is Computer Science Education Week, and Canyon will extend the week to encompass various lessons. The ultimate goal is to spark problem solving skills, creativity, and knowledge of how devices that we take for granted work. Over the next few weeks, students from kindergarten to 5th grade will be exposed and challenged to problem solve, create art, and think outside the box. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.

The Hour of Code is organized by CODE.org, a public 501c3 non-profit dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color. An unprecedented coalition of partners have come together to support the Hour of Code — including Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and the College Board.

The goal of the Hour of Code is not to teach anybody to become an expert computer scientist in one hour. One hour is only enough to learn that computer science is fun and creative, that it is accessible at all ages, for all students, regardless of background.

We are looking forward to having our students join this global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries and 149,710 Hour of Code events around the world! Be sure to ask your child(ren) about their participation!

Happy coding!

Thank you,
Nicole Sheard, Principal
