Among other duties, the Student Council will coordinate several student led community service projects during the year. Our first project is our annual Shoe Drive which will take place until November 4th.
We are asking our students and families to bring in slightly used or new athletic shoes. The shoes are given to the MORE Foundation. With every pair of gently used athletic shoes, MORE is able to plant one ton of carbon grounding trees and train poor farmers in sustainable agroforestry. Donating shoes keeps them out of the landfill. The proceeds from the shoes help MORE plant thousands of trees each year, which offsets carbon in the atmosphere. The shoes are sold in major metro areas to vendors who in turn create jobs and help improve the quality of life in cities. The proceeds from the sale of the shoes provides training and tools to the poorest rural farmers.
So many shoes sit in dark closets, forgotten and never worn, and then end up in landfills. Please take some time this weekend to go through closets to see if your family has any shoes to donate. Reusing these shoes further promotes the global efforts to reuse and recycle!
