In collaboration with the Westside Food Bank, Canyon Charter is holding our annual food drive to benefit those in need. According to Share Our Strength, more than 1 million children and teens in Los Angeles are eligible for subsidized meals and may be at risk of hunger, especially during the summer months. Of those, 650,000, more than half, are considered “food insecure.”

On Sunday, March 19th, ten 3rd-5th graders known as “The Flying Cows” represented Canyon at the First Lego League-Competition at Legoland. Under the guidance of their coaches, Eric, Mr. Velado and Lily, our participants had an awesome opportunity to practice imaginative thinking and teamwork while challenged to research a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc. and to develop a solution. They were also required to design, build, and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology, then compete on a table-top playing field.

Did you know that the California State Senate and Assembly have recently passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 23 by Senator Bill Monning establishing California Wildlife Day on March 20th? We were lucky to learn all about this at our last few Community Service Committee meetings. This special day will fall on the Spring Equinox each year and serves as a reminder to protect the extraordinary native plants and wildlife in our state.

I am happy to share that Canyon is now officially a 1:1 school in grades 2-5. What this means is that we have enough technology devices for each student to all be working at the same time. This was made possible by Booster and the purchase of 150 new Chromebooks.

The safety and welfare of our students and staff are our highest priorities. To provide schools an opportunity to practice emergency response procedures, the Superintendent of Schools has asked all students and staff to participate in a District-wide emergency preparedness drill on Tuesday, March 7th.

Thank you to everyone for taking part in our 3rd annual Jump Rope for Heart. We couldn't have asked for a more gorgeous day! Our students jumped their little hearts out as they rotated through 7 different stations. They got their blood pumping, they learned the importance of taking care of their hearts and they raised money for an important cause.
