What is Annual Giving
Annual Giving is a term you will hear throughout your time at Canyon Charter School. It’s our year-long campaign to raise the money needed to support all the enrichment programs that make this school such an esteemed, highly ranked local southern California public charter school, truly a gem in the LAUSD system.
Throughout the year, you will see our requests to support this campaign, as we intend to recruit each and every family to do their part in securing the incredible reputation this school has earned. It’s an invaluable circular relationship, as the involvement and fundraising efforts of all the committees at Canyon Charter School lead to an enviable endowment every year, providing the most excellent public education environment to our children. This in turn attracts more and more involved and caring families to join our school roster, and even local businesses to support and uphold our promise to the neighborhood. It’s a relationship that needs constant feeding, but reaps our children and our community immense rewards.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR
Each family will be asked to contribute $1200 per enrolled child to this Annual Giving campaign. You can make this contribution at any time during the school year, and you can expect to receive many outreaches to gain your commitment. If you make your contribution early in the academic year, this helps us build confidence towards our 100% participation goal, and you’ll drop from any remaining campaign touches.
We've recently developed an exciting NEW option for Annual Giving: donating some stocks. Contact Vesa Tontti to learn more.
GOALS FOR ALL CANYON CHARTER SCHOOL FUNDRAISING
The goal for the academic school year is to raise a minimum of $600,000 through all of our fundraising activities, to support the bare essentials, with a stretch goal of $700,000 to soundly achieve our future vision. We expect $400,000 to come from the Annual Giving campaign alone. If you plan your year of giving according to the structure of direct giving plus community-driven events described here, you’ll know how much is expected of you, what’s coming next, and how you can be a part of the fabric of this school.
FUNDRAISING PAYS FOR SCHOOL ENRICHMENT
Rather than a nationally run parent-teacher association, we run our fundraising and school decision making bodies with a Booster Club. The Booster Club is 501 3c tax exempt, allowing us full control of how we spend our precious funds. Fundraising pays for enrichment that far surpasses most public school curricula. Programs like art, music, drama, journalism, technology learning and physical education are expanded and amplified into fully funded, exceptionally run programs by dedicated instructors and knowledgeable staff.
ENHANCEMENTS TO CLASSROOM SIZE, SCIENCE LAB AND TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENTS
We set our own threshold for acceptable student to teacher ratios at Canyon Charter School, and in 2013, we have added a 4th grade teacher to reduce the class sizes. Additionally, we’ve purchased enough laptops to provide 1 laptop for every 2 students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classrooms, bringing technology learning to the classrooms, and readying every upper grade student for the technology sphere that lies ahead. Grades K-2 received dedicated Apple desktops in their classroom. We purchased additional laptops for our specialized computer instructor to travel to the younger grades to integrate digital learning into their environment and supplement their educational experience. Lastly, we’ve created a new, dedicated science lab for grades 2-5, run entirely by a LAUSD credentialed science teacher.
