Q: What is Canyon's policy on homework?
A: There is a homework policy that all parents should be aware of.
Homework is designed as a review and practice of skills taught in the classroom. It is meant to instill responsibility, independence, and time management. Homework will inform parents about students’ academic skills and the classroom expectations.
Teachers assign homework on a Monday to Thursday schedule according to the following guidelines:
Kindergarten: 15-20 minutes per day
Grade 1: 30-35 minutes per day
Grade 2: 30-35 minutes per day
Grade 3: 35-45 minutes per day
Grade 4: 35-45 minutes per day
Grade 5: 50-60 minutes per day
- No homework is given over weekends.
- No homework is given over vacations but there may be optional projects/activities.
- K-2 students do not stay in from recess to complete unfinished homework
- 3-5 students MAY stay in from recess to complete work. They will have time to use the restroom and eat a snack.
- Parent role – check homework for completion and quality. Parents should support and encourage only.
- All parents will be informed by their classroom teacher of the Homework Policy by one or more of the following: Back to School Night, parent letter, classroom website.
Q: My child has allergies, what are Canyon's policies when it comes to the allergic child?
A: Canyon has developed a parent packet of information for families where a child has mild to severe allergies. Please read the attached PDF on this subject and direct any questions you have to the school nurse or the Principal. Check out our Allergy Parent Packet
Q: What does GATE mean?
A: Gate stands for the LAUSD’s Gifted and Talented Programs and creates high end learning opportunities which allow students to flourish in stimulating academic and social environments. In designing challenging educational opportunities, we strive to raise the floor, remove the walls and eliminate the ceiling on learning.
Q: How can I make sure my child doesn't lose his/her things?
A: Label everything – with your child’s last name, not just initials or first name. It is especially important to label items that are likely to be forgotten (e.g. sports gear, sweaters, jackets, umbrellas, backpacks and lunch boxes) or common (e.g. Canyon wear). The rack has a lot of labeled clothes – even if you label things, you still need to claim them!
Check the rack frequently - after rainy weather there are piles of wet abandoned clothing. Even on dry days, clothes left on the yard can get wet from sprinklers. The lost and found racks are in the breezeway at the entrance to school. Unlabeled items are cleared and donated or recycled every 1-2 weeks. See the Chronicle calendar for dates.
Check again - it can take a few days for things to migrate from the corner of the yard to the racks, so if something it isn’t there the first time, check again!
Ask - did your child leave school with everything that they took to school?!
If you have a few minutes to spare, please help out by hanging up lost clothes.
Q: What teacher will I have next year?
A: The school has a policy decided by the Governing Board on which class your child is placed in and what you can do if you are unhappy about it. The Canyon staff works hard to ensure that all students will have a successful school year. Teachers are the ones who know the best educational placements for their students. Under Administrative
supervision, assignments were strategically and thoughtfully made to insure balanced classrooms and a place where students can succeed. In accordance with LAUSD policy, parents do not have the right to select a teacher. Respectfully, parents are asked to refrain from making such requests.
Q: Where can I find information on the process for Kindgergarten Lottery Admission? When should I submit my application and what are they key steps for application submission?
A: Every year, the applications are available the beginning of February. Usually the deadline will be late March early April, depending when Spring Break falls. Applications will not be accepted after the deadline. Please contact the school office at that time and check our "How to Enroll" for more information in February.
Q: What happens at the school in the summer?
A: Greg Herd and a team of workers take all the furniture out of every classroom and clean and wax the floors. Any maintenance that needs to be done in the rooms is completed and then the rooms are put back in the exact order the teacher wants it. Hard work to be sure and we all benefit in the fall. So when you see Greg and Jose this fall be sure to give him a shout out for a job well done.
Q: Why do we see construction crews at the school in July and August?
A: During the summer months LAUSD works on many of the problems that may have come up during the year.
Q: I went to Canyon years ago and would love to connect to other Alumni. How can I?
A: This website does not have information on alumni at this time however we encourage you to check out the numerous social sites as we've seen groups set up from certain graduating class years. Q: How can I find out what my child is expected to know and be able to do per grade?
A: You can visit the California Standards website and you'll see the standards expected by grade for Math and other subjects. Learn more about the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System by visiting this site.
Q: What is Canyon's policy on birthdays?
A: The Governing Board established the following policy regarding birthdays:
"Birthdays are not to be celebrated in the classroom in any grade. This was established to be fair to all students and to limit distractions from instruction. The policy forbids bringing food, treats, or party invitations to school."
