Journalism Instruction: Canyon Booster Club Volunteers

Frequency: Optional, 1x week, 4th and 5th Grades, after school, Spring semester

Working journalists and parent volunteers coach the students during this introduction to journalism. Students choose their own topics, research them, and interview adults and other students to gather information for their articles. At the end of each semester, The Canyon Cricket is published for the whole school, with student-generated news, interviews, cartoons, sports, editorials, photos, creative essays, and artwork.

Our goal is to help students learn how to ask questions, gather information, produce clear, concise articles, and, perhaps most of all, have fun while developing a passion for writing. We also encourage them, as they read or watch other news sources, to question how the information was obtained, whether it tells the whole story, and whether there might be a different version of the story.

Journalism is run by parent volunteers. If you are interested in helping run this program, please contact the 5th grade parent representative.
