Traffic Duty

Every Canyon family helps keep drop off and pick up safe, and this year you choose your own shifts. Each class takes a two week window, and each family in that class covers at least three shifts during their window.

We hope every family takes on three shifts, and we know that is not feasible for every family. If families who are able sign up for more than three, it helps alleviate the load on families who cannot. If three shifts is more than your family can take on, reach out to your room parent. We will find shifts that fit your schedule, or adjust the number, and you do not need to explain why.

How it works

Find your child’s class window below, then open the sign-up page and pick at least three shifts that fit your week. You can take mornings, afternoons or a mix of both.

Each shift has three posts, listed in carpool order: Front of Kinder, the Bridge Crosswalk, and the E Channel and Amalfi Crosswalk. One family covers each post, so you’ll know exactly where you’re standing before you arrive. Two of the three are crossing posts, where you walk students across in groups.

Your shifts are listed under your child’s name, so no parent names appear on the sign-up page. Once you’ve chosen, click Subscribe to your volunteer selections at the top and every shift you take this year lands in your own calendar. We’ll also email you three days before each shift and again the evening before.

If your plans change, please arrange a swap or replacement with another family in your own class first, then open the page, uncheck your shift and have them take it right away. Scheduling questions, swaps and adjustments are handled among classroom families rather than by the Booster Club. Please sort a change as early as you can, because an uncovered post means a gap at the curb. Your room parent will reach out to the class about two weeks before your window starts to fill any posts that are still open. If your family has not picked eleven days before your window opens, we will fill the remaining shifts for you. You can still swap or release anything we assign, the same way you would a shift you chose yourself.

Shift times

Morning: 7:45 to 8:15 a.m., every school day
Afternoon: 30 minutes from dismissal, which is 2:40 to 3:10 p.m. on most Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 1:35 to 2:05 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Dismissal moves earlier on a handful of days through the year. Every shift on the sign-up page carries its own date and time, so the card you pick is always the time to arrive.

What Your Shift Involves

Traffic duty volunteers are stationed at the drop-off and pick-up zones to keep children moving safely between their cars and the campus gates. Here is what that looks like in practice.

• Arrive a few minutes early so the volunteer on the shift before you can hand off cleanly.
• Morning drop-off: open car doors and help children out at your post. Kindergarten drops off in front of the kindergarten building, and Grades 1 through 5 drop off at the Library Gate.
• Afternoon pick-up: help escort children to their cars from your post as each vehicle reaches the front of the line.
• Keep the line moving. Drivers should stay in their vehicles at all times. A parked or empty car stops all traffic behind it and creates a safety hazard.
• Watch for the name placard on the passenger-side dashboard. It is how we identify which child to bring out, so please remind drivers to display it.
• Keep the Red Zone clear immediately to the left of the Library Gate. Cars parked there narrow Amalfi to one lane and block emergency vehicles.
• Never let a child cross between vehicles. Children should reach their car from the curb side only, at your post.
