Traffic Duty Works Differently This Year, and You Pick Your Own Shifts

Traffic duty moved to our website this year, which means you choose your own shifts instead of being handed a time that may not work. Every class window for the whole year is open right now, so you can pick your three and know exactly when you are on.

Traffic Safety is the committee every Canyon family joins. Three 30-minute shifts per child during your class's two-week window, standing at one of our three posts while our kids arrive and go home. It is the shortest volunteer commitment at Canyon and one of the most useful, because an uncovered post means a gap at the curb.

How it works now

Your child's class has its own two-week window. Open the sign-up page, find your class, and pick the three shifts that fit your week. Mornings run 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. Afternoons are 30 minutes from dismissal, and every shift carries its own time, so the handful of early dismissal days through the year are already built in and you will never show up at the wrong hour.

Shifts appear under your child's name, so no parent names show on the page.

Add them to your calendar once

Click Subscribe to your volunteer selections at the top of the sign-up page and every shift you take this year lands in your own calendar automatically. We also email you three days before each shift and again the evening before, so there is nothing to keep track of.

If you have not picked, we fill for you

Eleven days before your class's window opens, we assign whatever is still empty so no post goes uncovered. Your family gets an email telling you which shifts you have.

Picking your own is better for everyone, because you get the times that work for your family instead of the times that happen to be left. The whole year is already open, so there is no reason to wait for your window to come around.

Changing a shift

Plans change, and shifts can move. Several claimed shifts went uncovered last week, which leaves a crosswalk short-handed at the busiest part of the day, so this part matters. Please arrange a swap with another family in your own class first, then open the sign-up page, uncheck your shift and have them take it right away. Scheduling, swaps and adjustments are handled among classroom families.

If three shifts is genuinely more than your family can manage this year, reach out to your room parent. We will find shifts that fit your schedule, or adjust the number, and you do not need to explain why.
